Opinion: Business Council of Canada urges Ottawa to rethink oil and gas emissions cap

101

Goldy Hyder, president of the Business Council of Canada, wrote an open letter to Canada’s Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault urging his government to rethink its plan to bring in an emissions cap for the oil and gas sector.

In the letter, Hyder argues: “Pursuing a sector-specific emissions policy would come at a high cost, further eroding the basis of Canada’s carbon regime and creating undue harm to the economy and the purchasing power of Canadians. There are other measures your government can and should be pursuing that would have a far greater impact on lowering emissions.”
