40 cents a litre? Clean Energy Canada compares EV charging to price at pumps

68

In many parts of Canada, this coming weekend will be a long one. That extra summertime day off work can be a great way to fit in a quick road trip to the campground or to visit friends and family in another city. That can also mean having to spend a little more money on gas — unless you own an electric vehicle.

Clean Energy Canada, which is part of the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University, has published its third report comparing the cost of electric vehicles with those running on internal combustion engines. Setting aside the higher upfront costs of buying an electric vehicle for the moment, which the report notes are coming down, here is the bottom line:

“Gas prices would have to plummet to roughly 40 cents per litre to match the cost of EV charging.”

“The Scenic Route,” Clean Energy Canada, July 31, 2024.

The methodology for the cost comparisons is found on page 10 of the report.
