KHNP Adds Momentum to the Commercialization of Clean Hydrogen Produced with Nuclear Power

19 June 2024

• Contributing to the nation’s expedited carbon neutrality by building foundations for commercialization of clean hydrogen using nuclear power -

On the 19th, the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP; President & CEO Joo-ho Whang), Samsung C&T, Doosan Enerbility, Hyundai E&C, KEPCO E&C, Korea Gas Corporation, Korea Gas Technology Corporation, and Korea Power Exchange gathered at KHNP’s Radiation Health Institute in Seoul to sign the MoU on the "Commercialization of Clean Hydrogen Produced with Nuclear Power."

Through this agreement, companies and public agencies leading Korea’s carbon neutrality and hydrogen economy have vowed to establish a system of seamless cooperation for the successful demonstration of clean hydrogen production from nuclear power and for the implementation of the project’s commercialization at a suitable time.

According to the agreement, the parties decided to actively cooperate in the following areas: ▲establishment and operation of a massive, commercialized plant to produce clean hydrogen using nuclear power ▲development of a nuclear power-driven clean hydrogen production business model for domestic use and exports ▲creation of business foundations, including safety measures, regulations, laws, and institutions to produce and utilize clean hydrogen.

Since 2022, KHNP has been conducting fundamental research on clean hydrogen from nuclear power. Based on the findings, the corporation will begin to cooperate with twelve institutes for the next four years to launch a national-level research and development project on the "Demonstrating Carbon-free Power-integrated Low-temperature electrolysis for Renewable Energy Harmonization: Hydrogen Production and Operational Validation", with KRW 29 billion government funding.

“Clean hydrogen is a crucial means to unlock the future of sustainable energy and respond to climate change,” said KHNP’s President and CEO, Joo-ho Whang, highlighting the project’s significance. He also added “the production of clean hydrogen using nuclear power is the centerpiece of achieving carbon neutrality for Korea and realizing energy security for our future.” ...
