KHNP Takes Its First Step Toward Carbon Neutrality in Fuel Cells

17 June 2024

• Preparing Korea’s first carbon-neutral PAFC power generation business -

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP; President & CEO Joo-ho Whang) embarks on a mission to develop a "CO2-capturing technology for PAFCs※." This initiative has allowed the company to be the first in Korea to develop CO2-capturing technology for PAFC.

※ PAFC: According to their electrolytes, fuel cells are divided into phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFC), molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC), and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). PAFC uses natural gas as its fuel.

KHNP held on the 14th a project initiation meeting for technology development at its Gyeongju headquarters with companies specializing in fuel cells including Doosan Fuel Cell, AIRRANE, and Korea Engineering Consultants Corporation to discuss business schedules and other matters.

Through this project, KHNP aims to develop a technology that captures more than 90% of CO2released from PAFC fuel cell power plants. KHNP adopted this task as one of its internal missions, investing KRW 4.7 billion for 18 months until March 2025.

For the project, KHNP and the companies involved will build a 440 kW fuel cell as well as CO2-capturing facilities at the Yeosu Gwangyang Port (Maritime Industry Cluster Harbor) until November 2024 and run trials until March 2025. If the trials yield promising results, KHNP’s agenda is to apply the capturing technology to future fuel cell power plants to implement a carbon-neutral fuel cell power generation business.

"We will do our best together with our fellow enterprises to be the first in Korea to develop CO2-capturing technology for PAFCs. We will realize successful development as soon as possible to contribute to our country’s carbon neutrality," said Young-gon Kong, the Head of H₂ & Smart Business Department....
