Today, 19 February, marks the first day of our new operating structure, a critical milestone in the evolution of the Electricity System Operator as we transition towards becoming Great Britain’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) this summer.
When we become NESO, we’ll be responsible for planning Britain’s electricity and gas networks while continuing to operate the electricity system. Our purpose is to take whole system view to transform the energy system to meet the challenges of energy security, sustainability, and affordability for everyone.

The new organisational design facilitates the creation of the new Operations Executive Committee, led by Kayte O’Neill as our first Chief Operating Officer. This new team puts us in a position to better meet the needs of our current customers and prepares us to take our new evolving responsibilities and customers as we operate with a whole energy perspective across energy vectors.

Our new structure
Our Executive Committee (ExCo), chaired by Fintan Slye, Chief Executive Office, is responsible for setting the shape and goals of NESO and allocates resources to deliver against these goals. They will also track performance through our Business Performance Review. The ExCo is accountable to the Board and Shareholders.
Our Operations Executive Committee (OpCo), chaired by Katye O’Neill, Chief Operating Officer, is responsible for the delivery of operational transformation within the organisation and will focus on aspects of our business plan such as Key Performance Indicators, objectives, Full-Time Equivalent, and costs.
