Our new organisational design in preparation for the National Energy System Operator

19 Feb 2024

Today, 19 February, marks the first day of our new operating structure, a critical milestone in the evolution of the Electricity System Operator as we transition towards becoming Great Britain’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) this summer.

When we become NESO, we’ll be responsible for planning Britain’s electricity and gas networks while continuing to operate the electricity system. Our purpose is to take whole system view to transform the energy system to meet the challenges of energy security, sustainability, and affordability for everyone.

The new organisational design facilitates the creation of the new Operations Executive Committee, led by Kayte O’Neill as our first Chief Operating Officer. This new team puts us in a position to better meet the needs of our current customers and prepares us to take our new evolving responsibilities and customers as we operate with a whole energy perspective across energy vectors.

The Operations Executive Committee has been put in place alongside the Executive Committee, find out more about our two Committees below.

Our new structure

Our Executive Committee (ExCo), chaired by Fintan Slye, Chief Executive Office, is responsible for setting the shape and goals of NESO and allocates resources to deliver against these goals. They will also track performance through our Business Performance Review. The ExCo is accountable to the Board and Shareholders.

Our Operations Executive Committee (OpCo), chaired by Katye O’Neill, Chief Operating Officer, is responsible for the delivery of operational transformation within the organisation and will focus on aspects of our business plan such as Key Performance Indicators, objectives, Full-Time Equivalent, and costs.

Fintan Slye, Chief Executive Officer, said:

“I’m really pleased that Kayte is taking up the role of Chief Operating Officer in the ESO, leading our newly formed Operational Executive Team as we prepare to become the National Energy System Operator this summer. I know she will deliver real focus on meeting our customers’ needs.”

Kayte O’Neill, Chief Operating Officer said:

“This is an exciting opportunity and time for the ESO as we become the National Energy System Operator (NESO) this summer – the independent, public corporation responsible for planning Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

“Leading the Operations Executive Team will allow me to focus on meeting our current and future customers’ needs while continuing our commitment to ensure that Britain’s energy system is secure, affordable and forges a sustainable future for everyone.

“To mark the start of my new role, I’m meeting our customers to outline how these organisational changes will benefit them and discuss how we can decarbonise Great Britain’s energy system together.” ...
