World Energy Fuels World’s First Transatlantic Flight with 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Partners with Gulfstream to Achieve Historic Demonstration of SAF Endurance Viability

Boston, MA, November 20, 2023 – World Energy celebrates yesterday’s successful completion of the world’s first transatlantic flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in partnership with Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. Clocking in at 6 hours, 56 minutes, Gulfstream's G600 aircraft traveled on November 19, 2023 from Gulfstream’s Savannah, GA headquarters to Farnborough Airport, southwest of London. The success of this flight highlights 100% SAF’s long haul potential.

This transatlantic flight is unique and historic because the SAF used contained no added aromatics or other impurities. Using 100% SAF requires no additional treatment or blending logistics, increasing efficiency and decarbonization benefits.

The data collected from this endurance flight will help Gulfstream and its key suppliers gauge aircraft compatibility with future low-aromatic renewable fuels, particularly under cold temperatures for extended flight durations.

“With this flight, Gulfstream was willing to push the envelope to show what’s possible. They mobilized resources and personnel to demonstrate the future of sustainable aviation fuel,” commented World Energy’s Adam Klauber, VP of Sustainability and Digital Supply Chain.

“Gulfstream is innovating for a sustainable future,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream. “One of the keys to reaching business aviation’s long-term decarbonization goals is the broad use of SAF in place of fossil-based jet fuel. The completion of this world-class flight helps to advance business aviation’s overarching sustainability mission and create positive environmental impacts for future generations.”

SAF fueling both Pratt & Whitney PW 815 engines on the flight and net-zero emissions details:

  • 100% Hydro processed Esters and Fatty Acids (pure neat HEFA)
  • Zero added aromatics, lower sulfur, significantly reduced particulates than fossil-based jet fuel
  • Net-zero emissions. The World Energy-produced SAF in the G600 reduces flight life cycle emissions by 83%. The 17% residual carbon dioxide (CO2) + the ground transport emissions are covered by an additional SAF supply delivered to Los Angeles International Airport. SAF certificates (SAFc), showing ownership transfer of the Book & Claim credits, are supplied to Gulfstream along with the physical SAF environmental document known as the “Proof of Sustainability.” Emissions are eliminated using the physical SAF plus the SAFc to reach net-zero. The emission reductions are 100% within the aviation sector.
