Focus on Electricity System Operator

ESO was Great Britain’s electricity system operator, responsible for ensuring Great Britain has the essential energy it needs by ensuring electricity supply meets demand. Traditionally, Britain’s energy system was split into two regulatory areas – gas and electricity. However, the Energy Act 2023 mandated co-ordination across the whole energy system, with a single entity responsible for both electricity and gas policy. In September 2024, the UK Government purchased ESO from prior owner National Grid plc, and is transforming ESO into the UK’s new National Energy System Operator (NESO) on October 1 2024.
